This is partly due to drama in my offline life — like one in ten Americans, I am unemployed and looking for work. I’m spending most of my time these days sending out resumes and coverletters into various black holes, where I never hear of them again.

The other reason I haven’t been around much is that the pollen count where I live is incredibly high. We had a wet winter here in CA. It’s still raining even though it’s late May; usually the rain knocks off in March or April, giving me two precious months of sunlight before the fog rolls in in June. Not so this year. As if the gloom weren’t bad enough for my energy levels, the rain is contributing to record levels of pollen.

I’m one of those people who is allergic to everything. Animals, dust, mold, grass, weeds, and trees of every description. At the moment, the trees that are kicking my ass are the non-fruiting olive trees that the City planted on the sidewalk. For some reason, olive trees tend to trigger asthma and eye-itching symptoms before congestion and runny nose (but don’t worry! I’m still getting that crap from other trees, so I’m not deprived), and there’s nothing more draining than chronic low-grade asthma.

The reason why I’m bitching about this on a blog about ADD and organizing is that it reminds me why I do this in the first place. You see, I used to feel like this all the time. I actually used to feel worse, because in addition to the asthma kicking my ass, I got several inner ear infections a year because of my allergies. I struggled to wake up in the morning and often needed naps in the afternoon. I was tired, dizzy, disoriented, and completely unable to live my life.

Getting organized ultimately changed that. Once I ditched my clutter, I had less stuff around to collect dust. Once I organized what I owned, I could contain put it in containers, and then it was easier to keep clean. Once my space was organized, I could organize my time, and set aside parts of my day to maintain my home. It happened slowly, but soon I began to breathe a little easier. Then I noticed I had more energy. After awhile, I was able to get up without hitting the snooze button several times; and then, I found I could sometimes wake up on my own. As my energy increased, so did my ability to focus. I began to take some control over my moods and my ADHD symptoms, finally getting to the point where I am actually stable. It’s a reality I never could have imagined even three short years ago.

Today is like a visit from my old life. I slept for about ten hours last night and still had to drag myself out of bed this morning. I feel dizzy and spaced out and I can’t catch my breath. I need to summon the energy to vacuum with my trusty HEPA vac, because I know I will feel better once I do, but it’s an immense struggle even to think about it.

It totally sucks. On the other hand, there is a silver lining; as miserable as I feel right now, it’s an affirmation of the immense positive changes I have been able to make. It’s also a reminder of why I keep this blog . If someone like me — someone with attention deficit disorder, depression, asthma, allergies, and chronic ear infections — could overcome these barriers to getting organized and taking control of my life, so can anyone. Start small, have faith in yourself, and big changes will be the result.

I haven’t been blogging much lately. My offline life has been pretty hectic, as I mentioned in last week. But I got through a great big deadline yesterday, so I hope to get back to blogging, organizing, and blogging about organizing.

The deadline in question was the final critique for my art class, a self-directed painting seminar in which the students basically pursue their own projects, only with the advantage of structure, feedback, and people to commiserate with. It’s perfect for someone like me — I have an MFA, and while my draftsmanship leaves something to be desired, I don’t really need drawing and painting classes that focus on the basics. As much as I love making art, though, I find that I don’t tend to do it unless I have some sort of structure supporting me. I need to know that someone will be looking at what I make, that my teachers and classmates will wander over and check out where I’m taking my work. Even if they don’t give me feedback, even if I ignore the feedback they do give me, the conversations inspire me to keep the art happening.

Which brings me to the end of class, which brings me to the state of my studio space:

The Artist's Studio, With Ladybug Cookie

I was working on three large projects at once, and ran out of room on my table, which was covered in jars of medium, pigment, collage materials, and my lap top, which I have to move whenever I work. So I grabbed an end table from the living room to work on (it cleverly nests under another end table most of the time, so I didn’t even have to clear crap off it first!). That end table wound up with jars of paint all over it (as well as my Spring Cleaning Ritual Candles and Feast, consisting of a cookie shaped like a ladybug). But since it was a small table, and the piece I was working on was large, there are also jars of paint all over the floor, and stacks of National Geographics everywhere, and other random art supplies, as well as a handful of books, and receipts, and other random things. Seriously, you can walk in here without slipping on the slick surface of a National Geographic.

Only this isn’t the scary part. This is the scary part:

It just keeps getting worse ...

I know … it looks much better than the first picture. There are no bottles of paint, jars of medium, collage materials, tottering piles of National Geographics, or random bits of laundry. But under that big brown piece of paper lurks … paperwork.

That’s right. My studio, messy as it looks, was reorganized last Spring. I created a system that’s basically functional. The only thing I have to do is clear the table, clean the floor, and put things away.

But the kitchen table … that’s another story.

The kitchen table has a backstory. You see, my partner and I are barbarians who tend to eat in front of the TV instead of at the kitchen table like civilized folk. This is due in part to the fact that we like to watch TV. But it’s also due to the fact that the kitchen table tends to become a workspace, whether I want it to be or not. A few years ago I finally decided to own this; Stuart and I got a nice big coffee table for the living room, and we just eat dinner in there.

With the intent of using the kitchen table to expand my workspace, I was used it as a staging area during last year’s massive Spring Cleaning and reorganization project. I took everything off the shelves in my art studio, spread them on the kitchen table, sorted them, and put them away. Then I took everything off the nearby kitchen and pantry shelves, spread them on the kitchen table, sorted them, and put them away. Then I got distracted.

The tiny pile of “homeless” items remained on my kitchen table. Then it metastasized. It acquired other homeless items as the months went on. The scariest part is that it became a repository for my business receipts and paperwork … and those items are homeless because I don’t have a filing system set up yet, which means that I really need to bite the bullet and create a filing system. This is going to be the biggest challenge of my organizing transformation. Wish me luck.

I’m still pretty jet-lagged, but I’m recovering slowly.

As much as I freaked out in the weeks leading up to my trip, I’m proud to say it was a well-organized success. I remembered my underwear, and my passport, and my meds. I even remembered some French. All in all, I had an awesome time and I can’t wait to go back.

The whole experience got me thinking about some of the tools I use to stay organized while packing and traveling. Back in the day, I would say that the most stressful part of packing was dealing with toiletries. The night before I left town, I would inevitably be running all over the house trying to look for plastic bags to put my shampoo in so that it wouldn’t spill all over my clothing. Then I got a few simple travel toiletry items, and it made all the difference.

I store these items in my luggage so I always know where they are, and when I’m ready to pack I can just refill my shampoo and conditioner and be ready to go. The best thing about this list is that all of these items are available from under $20!

1. The Eagle Creek Pack-It Toiletry Kit at Magellan’s. In this airport-friendly kit, each bottle is clearly marked “3 oz.” and the bag itself is clearly marked “1 quart/liter”. It’s clear plastic, so you can see what’s inside. This is one of the best things I’ve ever bought.

2. Eagle Creek Travel Bottle Kit at Magellan’s.If you need extra bottles, or want to customize your Toiletry Kit, grab one of these. Again, all of them are clearly marked “3 oz.”

3. Eagle Creek Plastic Pack-It Sac, Xtra Small, Magellan’s I have a few of these running around. I use one for prescription meds, one for colored pencils … and I could really use another one for first-aid supplies like ibuprofen and band-aids. These are invaluable!

4. Eagle Creek Plastic Pack-It Sac, Small, Magellan’s I use one of these for make up. Since I don’t have that much make-up, nor do I wear it that often, I can just chuck the whole case into my luggage. The best thing? These are spill-proof. On the return flight, one of my eye-shadow cases broke, spilling finely-ground, slightly oily, colorful pigment all over my make up case — and it stayed inside the case, not all over my clothes.

5. Eagle Creek Mesh Laminate Pack-It Sacs, Xtra Small. So you want to see inside your bag, but you also don’t want to show all your underwear to everyone else waiting in the security line. These mesh laminate Pack-It Sacs come in various sizes, from extra small to large, and balance visibility with discretion.

5. Magellan’s Flat-Pack Toiletry Kit For longer trips, you’ll need to check a bag, and 3 oz. of shampoo might not be enough. I keep my toiletry kit stocked with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, contact lens solution, and a few first aid supplies.

6. Magellan’s Travel Jewelry Pocket OK, full disclosure — I don’t have one of these … yet. But I am going to get one. My current method of packing my earrings and necklaces in a series of nesting ziplock sandwich baggies is just. not. working.

Bon Voyage!

Then, due to some inexplicable corporate reasons, my partner was informed that the entire company will be shut down for the third week in February. Everyone has to use vacation time whether they want to or not.

So, we will be going to France the week before my husband’s industry meeting, instead of the week after … instead of leaving on the 20th we’re leaving on the twelfth … and I spent Monday in hyperdrive trying to make sure I could get everything accomplished that needed to get done before we leave. I realize that having to go to Paris a week earlier than I planned is a pretty good problem to have. But I gotta ask, Universe, really? I have attention deficit disorder. I have trouble getting anywhere late. And you decide I have to be ready eight days early? Thanks for that. Thanks a lot.

Anyway, here is my list so far, with line throughs on the items that are completed:

Things to get done before France:

Set up cat-sitting

Make Dr’s appointment for scrip

Get meds

Buy small storage containers for seeds

Shop for clothing:

two more quick-dry tops (one in ivory or cream, one in green?)

two pairs travel pants WITH POCKETS (one black, one brown)

one pair of jeans?

comfortable walking shoes that aren’t too fugly

warm hat

gloves

Buy travel jewelry bag?

Have pants hemmed

Choose guide books and phrase books

Practice French

Find reading material for plane

Clean house

Pack

Check CQ(OL)ZBOS* and top off any liquids

Sell all that stuff on Craigslist I was supposed to deal with in November

The first thing that occurs to me is that the Craigslist items are just going to have to wait. There’s no way I can deal with posting an ad and dealing with Craigslist flakiness while I’m trying to do everything else. So that one is off my list.

My cat sitter was able to change her dates, and I was able to get an appointment to see my doctor. I’ve ordered the shoes, hat, and gloves, officially with plenty of time for them to get here before I leave. We’ll see about that.

The seed storage container is for an art project (long story) for which I needed to sort some rainbow corn according to color. I don’t want to undo all that sorting, so the corn has been sitting on my studio table for … let’s see, two months now. If I get a place to put it I can finally clean up my studio. I can combine that errand, along with finding a pair of jeans, with my doctor’s appointment next Tuesday. Once that’s done I’ll be able to fill my prescription, and hopefully by that point I’ll be able to focus on getting myself ready to leave by Friday morning.

Wish me luck.

As I posted the other day, I’m going to Europe in a few weeks, and I have a ton of crap to get done before then. If this trip is like, oh, any other trip I’ve taken in my life, EVER, I’ll get all of it done at 3 am the day we leave on a 7 pm flight, by which point I’ll get just enough sleep to feel thoroughly exhausted before I even begin my travels.

But this time, things will be different! This time I’ll be organized. This time I won’t be scrambling for the last few days before I leave, trying vainly to get everything out of the way before I go.

Ha.

Anyway, to that end, I’m posting my to-do list here, and checking it off in a public fashion. I hope that will keep me accountable, or something. So, without further ado, I introduce to you… *trumpet fanfare*…

Things to get done before France:

Set up cat-sitting

Make Dr’s appointment for scrip

Get meds

Shop for clothing:

two more quick-dry tops (one in ivory or cream, one in green?)

two pairs travel pants WITH POCKETS (one black, one brown)

comfortable walking shoes that aren’t too fugly

warm hat

Buy travel jewelry bag?

Choose guide books and phrase books

Practice French

Find reading material for plane

Check CQ(OL)ZBOS* and top off any liquids

Sell all that stuff on Craigslist I was supposed to deal with in November

As I check items off this list, I will post it here.

Watch my progress! Thrill to the Anticipation — Succumb to the CHILLING Suspense — WILL I MAKE IT to THE AIRPORT ON TIME?!?!?!111!?

My partner travels a lot. And when I say “a lot”, I mean that when somebody asks me where he is, I have to stop and think pretty hard about it. Is it Beijing? No, that’s next week … Australia? Hong Kong? Seoul? Tokyo? … Brussels?

Last year he spent more time driving on the left-hand side of the road than the right. The people in the local airport lounge for his preferred airline know him by name. Sometimes I think this is because they see him more than I do.

What makes it worthwhile is that sometimes, when he goes someplace really cool, I get to go with him.

This February he has a meeting in Paris. Yeah, I know, poor me.

So I’m off to Paris in a month, or something, and I have a ton of stuff to do before I leave. I’m probably not the only one who finds international travel to be a little stressful, but as with so many things, I manage to make it just a tad bit worse.

My typical ADD travel planning procedure goes something like this:

Trip minus 6 weeks and counting. “I have that trip coming up soon. Next week I should really make sure I have everything I need in case I need to buy anything”.

Trip minus 5 weeks and counting. “I should make sure the cat sitter is available during our trip. I’ll e-mail her next week.”

Trip minus 4 weeks and counting. “That trip is coming up pretty soon. Next week I should check to see if I’m running low on any prescriptions.”

Trip minus 3 weeks and counting. “I wonder if I have contact lens cleaner in bottles less than 3 ounces. I should check on that before the trip.”

Trip minus 2 weeks and counting. “I wonder if any of my clothes fit?”

Trip minus 1 week and counting. (staring off into space) “La la la la la, la la la la la la la …”

Trip minus 3 days and counting. “OH CRAP I’M LEAVING FOR EUROPE IN THREE DAYS AND I ONLY OWN A SINGLE TORN PAIR OF BAGGY GRANDMA JEANS!”.

This time, I’m trying not to do that.

Since Rule Number One for managing my time and sanity is to avoid the mall at all costs, I do 95% of my shopping online. So far, I’ve ordered some tops, which have arrived in plenty of time to try them on and exchange the ones that didn’t fit. I still need to remember to do the actual return, but I at least I remembered to take care of ordering the replacements in the correct sizes. I now have two tops and a dressy winter jacket taken care of.

I still probably need one or two more tops, one or two pairs of pants, and maybe a vest or jacket or something to accessorize and pretend that I’m not wearing the same three shirts for two weeks straight. So far I’ve spent most of the evening looking for this stuff. Why is this so hard? I just want a couple of outfits that won’t wrinkle, will dry quickly, and don’t look like featured ensembles from my second grade teacher’s line of polyester couture.

Am I really being unreasonable?

There’s a lot of wisdom in the old adage “A Place for Everything and Everything In Its Place”. However, if your space hasn’t been organized before, most of what you own does not yet have its own “place”. This is why it’s important to set aside a portion of your home as a staging area. Ideally, this is a space that’s a little inconvenient to get to (so you’re not tempted to dump anything and everything there) but also big enough to contain all of the items you come across that don’t belong in the space you’re organizing, but that don’t yet have a “home”. We chose a part of the bedroom that isn’t in the way of foot traffic. Since we had to climb a spiral staircase to get there, we wouldn’t be tempted to use it as a repository for anything we were too lazy to put away.

What happens if you choose an area that’s in the general flow of traffic? So glad you asked. When I reorganized my art studio last Spring, I used the kitchen table as my staging area. At first, it just had a few things on it. Now it looks like this:

The flowers sure add class! And yes, that is a sock.

Anyway.

When we started organizing my food prep area, we knew that there would be four major categories. The first category was anything that didn’t belong in the kitchen, period. The second was any item that definitely belonged in the food prep area. The third category was for items that belonged in the kitchen, but not in the food prep area. The fourth was for those duplicate or unnecessary items that could be donated to charity. was for anything that was too trashed to be worth keeping. Finally, the was for anything that was too trashed to be worth keeping.

The food prep area consists of the following:

a counter

an oven/stove top

two storage cupboards

two drawers

a sink, and an under-sink cupboard

Adjacent to the food prep area are additional storage areas and appliances. There are:

a dishwasher

the water-heater closet

a tiny alcove with glass shelves

There’s also another tiny alcove with the following:

a tiny counter

a lower cabinet

a drawer

an upper cabinet

The dishwasher is in the way, and there's not a lot of space to move around it.

I initially had a huge mental block about the dishwasher. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I felt like I had to keep it in front of the sink; I used it in front of the sink, and the only place where it was really out of the way was the water heater closet. My friend pointed out that the darn thing is on wheels and it’s not that hard to move. Besides, I didn’t need to get into the water heater closet that often — and when I did, moving the dishwasher out of the way was not a big deal. So we took everything out of the water-heater closet (except the water heater, of course) and duly moved the dishwasher to its new home. It made a huge improvement.

Having moved the dishwasher to a more sensible location, we emptied out all of the cabinets and all of the shelves. We took everything out from under the sink. We took everything out of the drawers. We took everything off the counters. Then we stared for at it for awhile in order to figure out what we had.

My clutter buddy was at my home and by the end of that day I would, come hell or high water, have made some progress on organizing my home. My confidence had received a boost from learning that my apparently chaotic surroundings were actually a somewhat functional attempt to be organized, but I was nonetheless apprehensive. I had put so much work into organizing schemes and solutions over the years, and none of them had stuck. Could this attempt really be any different?

Fortunately, I had someone there to talk me down, in the form of my clutter buddy Jana. We had decided to start with part of my kitchen; since I used it every day, it would be easier to maintain, and the returns on our efforts would be immediate.

Having read about the “zone” system of organizing from Organizing From the Inside Out, we went through my kitchen and determined that there were several activity zones. Julie Morgenstern is a huge advocate of what she calls “the kindergarten classroom model” of organizing. A kindergarten classroom is broken up into activity areas: there’s a reading area, a dress-up area, an arts-and-crafts area, etc. The supplies used in each activity are stored in their “zone”, making clean-up easy and sometimes even fun.

In my kitchen, there were several zones, some of them overlapping.

The food preparation area; this was the area with the sink, the stove top and oven, and some storage cupboards.

The storage and pantry area, unfortunately located across the room from the food prep zone.

The laundry area is pretty much on top of the food prep zone, since the washer-dryer is a stacking unit that

The eating area, with the kitchen table and chairs, was adjacent to the microwave and the pantry zone.

The admin area was a built-in light table on one of the kitchen walls (the owners of the home are filmmakers) that we were using to store mailing supplies and notepads for taking phone messages.

Finally, there was the cat zone, where the cats’ water dish, food dishes, food, and grooming supplies were stored.

“I think we should help each other get organized”, she said.

I was stunned. “Get organized? Help each other?” I asked. “How can I be any help to you at all? You’re pretty organized already. I’m a chaos demon. I think I just need to come to terms with that.”

“I realize that I know more about organizing than you do,” said my friend. “That’s OK. But I just moved in with my partner, I’ve got a lot of unpacking to do, and two people’s stuff to deal with. I could use the company. And I think I could help you a lot.”

“Look, I’m grateful, I really am. I’m happy to help you get unpacked. I just don’t think I’ll ever be organized. Honestly. I’ve tried EVERYTHING. You wouldn’t believe the money I’ve wasted on containers and drawer organizers. Besides, I’m in grad school, and I have a job … I have no time and no money.”

“Do you have one afternoon a week?” she asked.

“Well, I guess Friday afternoons are free”, I said.

“Great. If I recommend a book, a single, inexpensive book, are you willing to buy it?”

“I don’t know. I feel like I’ve read everything and nothing works. Besides, I’ve got a ton of reading to do already.”

“You haven’t read this,” my friend told me. “And it’s easy. It won’t take you any time at all.”

“OK, fine, I’ll buy the book”, I said. “I just don’t want you to feel bad if this doesn’t work.”

“I know you’ve had a lot of bad experiences in the past, but I know you, and I really think this will work. I wouldn’t be suggesting it otherwise,” my friend said. “Go find that book. And I’ll see you Friday.”

Hmph, I thought to myself after I hung up. We’ll just see about this book.

The book, Julie Morgenstern’s Organizing from the Inside Out, would change my life. Using it, I was actually able to organize my space, starting a cascade of healthy, positive change that has completely transformed the way I see myself.

And also that thing. You know. That weird metal thing that looks like it was the business end of a tool of some kind, and you’re sure you saw the handle just the other day, and you’ve been meaning to repair it for years, but by now you have no idea what it even does.

Junk drawers, files marked “miscellaneous”, and boxes labeled “random crap” are self-fulfilling prophecies. They will inevitably come to be filled with miscellaneous junk and random crap. They’re also not at all helpful. I had a friend in college who packed up her dorm room one year, carefully (she thought) labeling boxes with their contents, only to discover next year that she had ten boxes with labels like “science textbooks” and “winter clothes”, and ten boxes labeled “miscellaneous”. She had to unpack all 20 boxes to find her bathrobe.

What to do if you can’t have a junk drawer or a random file folder? I’ll give you a hint: if it’s important enough to keep, it’s important enough to have it’s own name. For more information, check out Room-inations from Neatstreak.

*Yes, at one time I really had a box marked “random crap”.

OK, I’ll be honest; I had several. And some file folders.

It was Not Good.
